Fuelling your active lifestyle

Hii Fitness MD Matt Hancocks talks us through some of the ways he maintains such high energy levels despite his demanding job and active lifestyle.

Exercising 3-5 times per day, MD of a fast paced business and living a very busy lifestyle, people often ask how I continue to maintain such positivity and an abundance of energy, and to be perfectly honest, I put a lot of it down to time-saving nutrition, and functional foods.

Superfood packed Juices, protein shakes, smoothie bowls and snacks are delicious, and offer the body so much nutritional support. I’ve been interested in functional nutrition for years and is the reason why we have created a nutrition-led refuel bar at our Sheffield based fitness studio.

As a health coach, it’s really important for me to keep up my energy throughout the day as I regularly teach first thing in the morning and at the end of the working day, which is more often than not 12-14 hours long. My style of coaching also means I’m active in all sessions I teach. In addition, I like to keep up with my own training, 5-6 times per week.

This can all be very demanding on my body and the joints in particular! and although I do include some incredible recovery sessions within my training program, What I put into my body is super important to help me re-charge and refuel between coaching sessions and workouts.

I personally follow an 80/20 diet, so like to put as much nutrient dense, natural foods into my system as possible, so finding the right kind of protein powder for me is vital. That’s why I make sure to look at how it is sourced, manufactured and of course the taste! I’ve been using Nutristrength Whey Protein Isolate for about 4 years now and I’ve been super impressed with how much energy it gives me when combined with the right functional powders.

One of my go to post training smoothies is the “hii energy” protein smoothie

Hii Energy Banana Smoothie

  • ½ frozen banana
  • 330ml almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein
  • 1 tsp naturya energy blend
  • Ice
  • Few crushed almonds on to

This combination supports normal energy metabolism and muscle function, includes  a high dose of vitamin C, copper, potassium and manganese to support an active lifestyle, protecting the body from oxidative stress and contributing to the normal function of the immune and nervous systems.

Although I do enjoy a cup of coffee, I try and keep it down to 1 cup a day. If I’m feeling like something sweet about 11:00, I like to create a healthy Mocha. Simply adding Naturya congnition blend to a cup of coffee boosts not only the flavour but the nutrition.

Packed with manganese & potassium to help protect cells against oxidative stress and support the nervous system this really is a chocolate powder with some super powers!

I also drink 1-2 cups of premium grade matcha tea daily. Matcha is ground down green tea leaves and helps me Feel Alert, yet calm.

L-theanine found naturally in matcha has been shown to boost alpha brain wave power by +75%! which lead to a state of relaxed alertness. While L-Theanine is common in all tea, matcha may contain up to five times more than regular green teas. It also helps release the energy to your body steadily over 5-6 hours so you feel naturally energized without feeling anxious and nervy with a sudden crash like you do with coffee.

Amongst its many health benefits, matcha…

  • Is packed with antioxidants including the powerful EGCg
  • Boosts metabolism and burns calories
  • Detoxifies effectively and naturally
  • Calms the mind and relaxes the body
  • Boost the immune system
  • Is rich in fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins
  • Enhances mood and aids in concentration
  • Provides vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium
  • Prevents disease
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • balances blood sugar

Because Matcha is a powder it is very versatile and so can also be added to smoothies, juices, and desserts.

These Hii energy protein balls are the perfect snack between meals or if you need an energy boost pre or post workout. Just one will give you a powerhouse of protein and superfoods.

These little power balls are so easy to make and can be frozen, so are the perfect snack when on the go. They also taste incredible!

Hii Energy Protein Balls

  • Cacao powder
  • Medjool dates
  • Cashews/Almonds
  • Protein powder
  • Goji Berries
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Matcha powder
  • Chia Seeds
  • Maca powder
  • Desiccated coconut
  • Coconut oil

Goji berries are rich in iron & copper to energise the body and support immunity and potassium to nourish the muscles

Cacao is rich in copper to energise the body and magnesium to support an active mind

Chia seeds a high in omega-3 fatty acids to help balance cholesterol and support cellular function. They are also a great source of protein to help build muscles

Maca is a great source of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and iron to fight fatigue, it also supports immunity.

In Conclusion, the most likely reason for when people experience low energy levels and fatigue, is because their mitochondria (the part of cells responsible for making energy) are not working effectively and efficiently.

This could be due to illness, or infections but for the majority of people it will be nutritional deficiencies. By adding nutritionally dense superfoods to your diet you are ensuring your body, tissues and cells are getting everything they need to produce energy effectively.
