What to Wear for the Gym

The gym isn’t meant to be a place where a fashion show takes place. The important thing is that you feel comfortable. Of course, you can look good at the same time. There’s nothing wrong with that! But you want to avoid wearing gym clothes that are too big, too small, or that make working out uncomfortable. So, it’s a good idea to invest in some gym clothes that create a go-to outfit when it’s time to exercise at the gym.

What To Consider When Shopping for Gym Clothes

Here are a few things to watch for when you shop for gym clothes!

 

1. The Materials

Today’s gym wear offers a wide variety of materials rather than just spandex and cotton fabrics. Today, activewear is made from synthetic materials such as polypropylene, acrylic, and nylon. The fabric for gym clothes also wicks away moisture, so you feel drier as you work out. Plus, you stay cooler. On the other hand, gym clothes made with cotton tend to hold on to moisture and make you feel like a soggy mess.

The fabric used for gym clothes should be lightweight and made for moving around in different ways. No matter how you move when doing yoga stretches or pumping weights, gym clothes need to feel comfortable.

 

2. Workout Tops & Bottoms

When it comes to your workout tops and bottoms, it’s best to choose clothing that’s loose; however, they shouldn’t be too baggy, either. The key is to feel comfortable when you’re moving without feeling restricted.

For example, a yoga tank top may be more comfortable for a yoga class, paired with yoga leggings that allow movement. However, you may want to choose joggers or running shorts for running on the treadmill or cycling. The shorts should hit just above your knees to allow for flexibility and free movement.

 

3. Your Sneakers

The shoes you wear to exercise in are also important. Running shoes should be replaced about every 300 to 500 miles. However, if you’re not tracking your miles, that’s OK. You can still see if your shoes are wearing out or not. Look for signs of the tread becoming smooth and/or separating. That’s a clear sign you need new shoes.

What’s more, older shoes don’t provide the support and shock absorption you need. When treads or other parts of the shoes become worn down, you may start to feel a change in your body’s alignment. This may put additional stress on your feet, knees, and hips. It can also affect your back. Ouch!

 

4. What to Look for in Gym Shoes

When you’re choosing new gym shoes, look out for shoes that provide the support you need. Remember to choose shoes based on how you work out, too. Some shoes are made for weightlifting, while others are made for running. The right support is essential to your well-being when exercising.

Cross-training shoes offer the right support for a wide range of movements and workouts, including running short distances, group exercise classes, and more. They also provide the lateral support and flexibility you need.

For running on a treadmill, it’s best to choose a running shoe that provides stability and cushion for this activity. However, if you’re running outside, you need to buy a shoe that’s made for various terrains.

What about heavy weightlifting? It’s best to choose a flat-soled shoe that offers some arch support.

And when you’re choosing the right gym shoe, don’t forget to get the right socks, too! Your gym socks should match the type of exercises you do. And they should be made of moisture-wicking fabric to keep your feet healthy and dry. Choose the thickness and length that’s most comfortable for you.

 

5. Find a Good Sports Bra

The right sports bra is also important. The goal is to find a sports bra that fits well and prevents excessive bouncing, especially during high-impact exercises. Look for sports bras made of comfortable, moisture-wicking material. The bra should also provide the right level of support.

The type of sports bra you choose really depends on breast size and the type of exercises you do. For smaller breast sizes, a compression bra is usually the best. This holds breasts in place and is best for low- to -moderate workouts.

For larger breasts, you may want to consider an encapsulation sports bra made with individual cups for more support. The bra should have wider straps; these work to distribute weight more evenly. And be aware of spilling out. The sports bra should offer plenty of coverage on the front and sides.

 

6. Gym Leggings or Shorts

Another choice for the gym is gym leggings. These are comfortable and come in a wide variety of colours, sizes, and patterns. Consider gym leggings made from moisture-wicking fabrics that are breathable. These will help you stay cooler and drier as you work out. Choose polyester or nylon leggings and avoid anything made from cotton.

If you’d like to go for gym shorts, it’s a good idea to choose those that offer wide legs that allow for plenty of movement and ventilation. Be sure to purchase shorts that are comfortable and work for the type of exercise you do.

 

What Not to Wear to the Gym

Here are a few things not to wear when you head to the gym!

 

Jewellery

Necklaces that are too long or earrings that dangle can be dangerous at the gym. They can bounce around as you exercise or even become tangled in some types of equipment.

Rings can also be a problem. They may keep you from having a good grip or pinch when you’re holding on to equipment.

 

Overly Baggy Clothes

Clothes that are too baggy may be comfortable; however, they can also get in the way when working out.

 

Too Tight Clothes

On the other hand, clothes that are too tight can also be a problem. They can restrict movement and may not provide the flexibility and stretch you need. A snug fit is OK; however, it must allow you to move easily and freely.

There’s a lot to consider when choosing the right clothes for the gym! Of course, heading to the gym is not about putting on a fashion show! The goal is to find gym clothes that keep you comfortable and allow you to freely move when working out.
